Silicon carbide, also known as carborundum or SiC, is a technical ceramic material that is prized for its light weight, hardness, and strength. Since the late 19th century, silicon carbide ceramics have been an important material for sandpapers, grinding wheels, and cutting tools. More recently, it has found application in refractory linings and heating elements for industrial furnaces, as well as in wear-resistant parts for pumps and rocket engines. Additionally, it is used as a semiconducting substrate for light-emitting diodes.
Silicon Carbide Properties:
Low density
High strength
Excellent thermal shock resistance
High hardness and wear resistance
Excellent chemical resistance
Low thermal expansion
High thermal conductivity
